Cornbunting

Lesser Redpoll

Wild bird numbers are an important Government Quality of Life Indicator

Yet there has been a crash in our rural and urban songbird
population over the last 40 years

Why?
The Prevailing View:
Habitat Loss & Modern Farming

THIS IS MISLEADING BECAUSE

Broadleaf woodland has increased by a third since1947

Hedgerows increased 11% between 1990 & 2007

Over 70% of farmland is in Environmental Stewardship

(costing over £400 million and still not delivering)
Yellowhammer

Spotted Flycatcher

Our Songbird population should be increasing BUT IT IS NOT
WHY NOT?
• Predator & Scavenger numbers at record levels
• Unnatural abundance & density of predators / scavengers ignored
Cats
Domestic & feral cats; non-native: kill at least 55 million songbirds every year

Squirrels
Non-native, eat nestlings & eggs, compete for food, destroy broad-leaved trees, driving native Red Squirrels to extinction
Corvids
Corvids; carrion crows, magpies, jays, jackdaws: all take eggs, eat fledglings & adult birds
Parakeets
Non-native; tenfold increase in 40 years; out competing native birds for food & nest sites
