The term “songbird” is sometimes used generally to refer to all birds, but the word “songbird” has a very specific scientific meaning. Almost half of all the world’s bird species are songbirds, and they all share the same traits:
There are more than fifty species resident in the UK and over thirty migratory songbird species which come to the UK in winter or summer.
Songbirds can be seen in your garden, in parks, woodlands and on farmland. If you feed birds at home, most of the birds that visit your feeder will be songbirds.
Songbirds occupy a vital role in global ecosystems, and sadly, biodiversity is declining in the UK and across the world. The local population size of songbirds provides an indicator of the severity of this decline. It’s up to us all to ensure that songbirds can live and thrive in their natural habitats.
